KinKind
An intergenerational pilot project connecting Older Australians with new mums.
What is KinKind?
KinKind is a new pilot program supported by The Nurtured Village that matches Older Australians with a local family who have welcomed a new baby into their family in the last 2 years. This is a free 10 week program that will see Older Australians visit this family once a week for 1 hour for a 10 week program.
Made possible by Endeavour Mining this pilot program is an Australian first in a rural community and we are thrilled to be bringing it to Central West NSW.
How is works
The pilot runs for 10 weeks in Forbes, NSW commencing late September 2025
We match volunteers and mums based on shared values and location/availability
Older volunteers visit 1 local mum once a week for 1 hour
Each Older Australians volunteer is matched with 1 mum and they journey through the entire 10 week program together
Visits might include a gentle outing with the family, reading books to older children, helping with light household tasks, a warm cuppa, an extra set of hands, hold the baby while mum showers, intergenerational connection, social connection
All volunteers are screened (must have current Working with Children check) and supported by our team
Program participants will be fully insured by The Nurtured Village
Who is it for?
Older Australians - Kind hearted and have some extra time to connect to a young local family? We'd love for you to join us. Older volunteers don’t need to be a Grandparent or have had their own children - we are simply looking for local Older Australians who are generous, kind and open to connecting with a young local family.
New mums - If you've welcome a new baby into your home in the last 2 years and you’d love a friendly Older Australian visiting your family once a week - this may be for you.
Why are we doing this?
In our 2024 survey, 94% of mums shared that they felt isolated in parenthood. Modern motherhood can feel deeply isolating. Families live further apart, support networks are stretched thin and so many mums are navigating the early years of parenthood without the village they need. We are parenting without the village more than ever before and for years we, at The Nurtured Village, have dreamt about this project and the power of intergenerational connection in forging that village for mums.
At the same time, many Older Australians are longing for purpose and connection. Research tells us that 1 in 3 Older Australians report feeling lonely and recent Australian research shows that sustained loneliness can triple the risk of early death-but regular, meaningful connection can protect mental health and wellbeing.
We hope that by facilitating 1 hour, 1 conversation, 1 social connection at a time has the ability to forge the village - to build connection, community involvement and relationships that have a lasting impact on that persons day, and maybe even their life.
Through KinKind we are bringing 3 generations together to show each other that they are valued and not alone.
“These programs don’t just benefit individuals - they strengthen the social fabric of entire communities” Wentworth Healthcare, Nepean Blue Mountains PHN, 2023
Currently - seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from Older Australians and new mums located in Forbes in NSW to participate in this program. Note: we are matching 4-6 pairs in this 10 week pilot.
